Being the Best You Can Be Inside & Outside the Martial Arts

Well, it looks like the primaries are over and we finally have our major candidates determined for the general election.  While I normally do not talk politics, I wanted to share my conversations with a group of kids from Weber Elementary School located in East Over.

I was fortunate to have been invited to teach the kids karate during one of their summer camps.  The kids were primarily 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.  While I wanted to teach them some techniques that might help them deal with bullies or strangers, a big part of my message was telling them about how important good character is and how it can impact them in such a positive way growing up.

Then I asked them if they knew what was important about our current political race for President.  Not surprisingly, most didn't have an answer to this question, but a few of the kids did.

This is the first time in our history that we have an African American running for President.  This was the first time in our history that we had a female running for President!  How exciting!

Now, before everyone gets nervous thinking I am a Democrat, I have been an independent all of my voting life and I always vote for who I believe is the best person to lead our country.  I have never voted just because of party affiliation.  Quite frankly, I am not too excited with either party right now.

But, you have to admit, it's pretty cool to see a female and an African American going for the highest office in the land.  50 years ago, 25 years ago, maybe as little as 10 years ago; none of us thought this was even possible.

I told the children that they have the potential to be anything they want to be if they work hard, get good grades and have great character!  These are some of the principles behind achieving your black belt in karate.

Who knows, maybe one of these children from Weber Elementary School might end up being President one day!
