Much like climbing a ladder, exams are designed to help students prove to themselves and their peers that they have the knowledge and skills to move on to the next level.

Periodic exams apply the necessary pressure to encourage students to reach their goals within a reasonable timeframe. They help instructors to get a feel for where a student might need some particular attention, while also helping the school to improve its program based on how they see students perform.

Samurai Karate Studio is a black belt school. The goal, of course, is to help each student achieve black belt through a series of successful belt promotions. Good attendance plays a crucial role in a student’s successful trip up the ladder. Most folks approach exams and tests with relative apprehension. This is where a positive attitude can really prove beneficial.

If a black belt is what you really want, then you must prepare for your exams to the best of your ability. Study and practice until you know your stuff. You’ll have the confidence to tackle exams head on, and before you know it, you’ll have earned the right to be a black belt.

Samurai Karate Studio teaches a traditional style of Japanese karate to children and adults, beginning at age 4. Very often it’s the small details of daily life that slow you down. The following are some suggestions to maintain good school grades and to be a successful student:

First impressions are often the only impressions you get to make. Make your teacher’s first impression of you one that will help you get good grades and all the help you can use. Remember that your first few classes are your most important classes. This is where you get off on the right foot and to a good start. Concentrate and be alert so you can do your best.

Your room is your castle and your office. Be sure to make it orderly and functional. Keep it clean.

Prepare for tomorrow the night before. Set out your clothes for the next day. Pack your backpack with your completed assignments and books you used. Put it an accessible place so it is ready to go in the morning.

Get a good night’s rest. Start the day in a relaxed and purposeful manner. Set your wake up clock with enough time to do what you have to do in the morning. Thirty minutes is never enough to get ready for school, and it is not fair to you, your grades, or your teacher.

Be on time for school and your classes. Late is never good, while early is almost always the way of the winner.

The best time to do your homework is right after you get home. You will have a better chance of remembering that day’s instruction, and less of a chance if you chose other distractions first. Do it NOW! The best time is NOW!

Rule your own life. If you let the television, video games, or your friends rule your life, then you will not be the winner you should be. You have a life of your own. It is worthwhile and meaningful. Rule it yourself.

Learn how to hang up the phone. Use respect, but hang up anyway. Your teachers will not accept a 2-hour phone call as a reason for poor or incomplete homework. Learn to say, “Can I please call you back in 30 minutes?”

Walk away from situations or people that will destroy your mental or physical growth. Rule your own life. Make good use of small blocks of time. There is no rule that says you have to lay comatose while listening to music or watching TV. Do some of the easy stuff at those times.

Have a POSITIVE relationship with your parents and your teachers, and always maintain respect. Show respect at all times, and you will do much better.

BE SELECTIVE IN CHOOSING YOUR FRIENDS. You do not have to be friends with the whole school. Pick out a few people who are headed in the same direction in life that you are. If you hang out with the respectful, intelligent, and safe people, then you will be respectful, intelligent, and safe.

Think about it. You tell your best friend that you can only talk to him/her for a few minutes because you have homework. Do they get upset? If your friends cause you to skip the important things, then they are not your friends. If they understand because they are doing the same thing, then you will never be under pressure to do the wrong thing. PICK YOUR FRIENDS WITH CARE. YOU ARE WORTH THE TIME.

Have the phone number of one person in each class minimum. Swap phone numbers so you can exchange notes or other class information, or even get homework assignments if you are sick or absent.

Choose to be a winner. Never accept anything but the best from yourself. If you find yourself in danger, or slipping, ask for help! No one can expect to succeed in school and in life without help.

If in doubt, ask yourself how would a Black Belt behave......often the answer is right there is you ask the right question.

Have a safe successful and KICK’N school year.

Sensei

Samurai Karate Studio is located in Columbia, SC 29229. We teach a traditional style of karate for students beginning at the age of 4 years and older. For more information, please call us at 803-462-9425 or visit our website at www.samuraikaratestudio.net.

Do you have what it takes to "live by the code"?

Summer Nights at Samurai Karate Studio

Last night, SKS hosted another "summer nights" class. The idea behind this class is to take advantage of the daylight and go outside and train and most importantly, have some fun. Unfortunately, it was just too hot, so we trained inside.

During both kids classes, we had a lot of fun with our warm ups, playing dodge ball and "duck, duck, goose with the preschoolers.

During the adult class, we warmed up with the name game and worked on creative self defense techniques.

For every student who participated in class, they received a cold drink after class, plus a free ice cream from Rita's, located in the Sandhill's shopping plaza. Many of the adults left the studio and headed for Rita's to get there ice cream. There must have been at least 10 of us there.

By 9:00pm, there were just a couple of us left, but it was really nice. The temperature had dropped and there was a cool breeze.

Too bad if you did not attend class, you missed a lot of fun, a cool drink and some great ice cream!

Samurai Karate Studio teaches a traditional style of karate to children and adults, beginning with kids age 4. The studio is located at 2000 Clemson Road, Suite # 9, Columbia, SC 29229. You may reach us at 803-462-9425 or visit our website at www.samuraikaratestudio.net.

Do you have what it takes to "live by the code"?

Self Defense Alert

I recently came across a blog from Mr. Marty North that noted a potential new tactic that criminals were using to "draw out" their prey. This is supposedly being applied to women living alone in their house.

"Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her "Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over.

The policeman said, "We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door." He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby.

He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night. Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby"!

Thanks for passing on the tip Mr. North!

Samurai Karate Studio teaches a traditional style of karate for children and adults, beginning with kids age 4. The studio is located at 2000 Clemson Road, Suite # 9, Columbia, SC 29229. You may reach us at 803-462-9425 or visit our website at www.samuraikaratestudio.net.

Do you have what it takes to "live by the code"?

Be Street Smart!

In this day and age, you always have to be "on guard" no matter where your travels take you. Whether you are making a quick trip to the grocery store, going to the movies or visiting your favorite shopping mall. The reality is, there is potential danger lurking out there and you need to be mindful of this.

Now, does that mean you should hide in your closeout all day, because you are so certain you are vulnerable? Of course not! But, the best defense is to be aware at all times in the event something should happen.

A few safety tips that will help keep you safe on the streets:

1. Body language -- walk with your head up, your shoulders back and your chest out; with your arms swinging at your sides. This body posture conveys a confident person, one that isn't necessarily weak or scared. The second benefit to this body posture, is your eyes are up and should constantly be scanning for danger. The moment you see it, you run in the other direction.

2. Avoid being distracted -- who hasn't carried a cell phone, only to have it ring and your turn your back while talking. Most of us, when we do this, are trying not to be rude; however, once you turn your back, you are giving someone the opportunity to sneak up on you.

Another example? Who doesn't have a mother who was fumbling through her big old pocket book looking for her keys? How about stopping by a store front to look into the window display? Reaching into your car looking for your wallet? Balancing your check book?

Hopefully, you get the message. We are all distracted at times by different things, just remember to stay alert at all times.

3. Avoid dangerous places -- Okay, this should be common sense to everyone. Don't go down that dark alleyway at night, avoid the "bad" section in town at all times, but particularly at night, parking in a remote garage, or secluded, unlit mall parking lot.

Sometimes people are just unlucky, in the wrong place at the wrong time. Your job is to do your best to avoid those areas that might find you trapped and in danger.

4. Understand the intent -- If you find yourself in a threatening situation, try your best to determine the "intent" of your attacker. Is he or she just looking for money? Your car? In that case give it to them. If it is your money, always throw your wallet or purse away from you to the ground. In most instances, the attacker is more interested in your money and this gives you an opportunity and run and escape!

5. Avoid conflict always -- If faced with a threatening situation, always attempt to run away, and run away fast. Even when there is a weapon involved, like a gun, statistically, your chances of being shot are slim, less than 10%, particularly if you can run in a zig zig or random pattern.

6. Remember to breathe -- as soon as your brain senses trouble, you instantly will feel an adrenaline rush, which will accelerate your heart rate and make you feel weak. It is critical to try and control your breathing and to clear your mind.

7. Power of your voice -- Your voice can be a powerful weapon. Remember to yell and yell loudly. Research tells us that more people respond to the word "fire" than any other word. What ever word you chose, make it loud and repeat it over and over!

8. Go into survival mode -- Once you realize you have no where to run and you must defend yourself; you must tell yourself you are worth it and kick your brain into survival mode. You do what ever you need to do to survive. Some victims have talked how they thought about their children or another family member and actually got mad for being threatened. What ever it takes to get your "juices flowing", do it!

9. Take a self defense course -- Even a short seminar will help you to learn basic techniques that can save your life. Better yet, enroll in a martial arts program. The more you practice and train at your self defense techniques, the better able you will be to defend yourself!

Sensei Feldt is the owner of Samurai Karate Studio. After warming up with the name game, each Samurai Karate Studio student paired up with another student and created their own self defense form. Some of the students had plastic knives, while others were defending against a punch or kick. While most of my students would be classified as beginner to intermediate, there were some really creative techniques.

As each team came out on the floor to demonstrate their technique, I tried to get other students to comment on the form. This process is not meant to pick on any one student or any one form, but to get everyone thinking about what they would do in the event they were attacked on the street.

As each pair walked through their form, I tried to highlight what I liked or didn't like about the form. This drill is meant to get the students thinking about what works or doesn't work in an attack scenario.

I love self defense and feel very strongly that every child and adult should be trained in the martial arts, just for the sake of being more prepared and confident to face a bully or threat by a stranger.

At Samurai Karate Studio, we practice certain self defense forms according to step by step techniques. Ultimately, my goal is to help everyone of my students think about the situation they are in and apply the knowledge they have learned, so that they can escape from whatever dangerous encounter they face. On the street, you can't think step by step; you have to react and adapt, and do whatever it takes to survive.

Samurai Karate Studio teaches a traditional style of karate to children and adults, beginning at age 4 and is located at 2000 Clemson Road, Suite # 9, Columbia, SC 29229. Whether these attacks affect him or her long term or not has to do with many different factors. One type of attack that I want to address in this report is the common “Bully.”

Bullying has always been a part of growing up, but how a child deals with it and the repercussions of dealing with it have changed dramatically. There are “Zero Tolerance” rules that punish both children if there is an altercation, (which may have been caused by one child bullying the other.) So the old adage “If they hit you hit ‘em back!” doesn’t fly today.

So what is your child to do? First off, we all must recognize that incidences of bullying vary in severity. One thing that is certain is that repeated attacks whether verbal, physical, or written (yes written, there have been reports of children being bullied through email!) erode your child’s fragile self-esteem. The CDC linked bullying to isolation, drug use, violence, and suicide! But your child does not have to be a victim! The assault can be verbal or physical, either way the first line of defense remains the same. What is the first line of defense? Self-Confidence! Here’s why.

Bullies choose their victims much like a criminal would choose their victim; they go for the easy and obvious target. So if your child looks like a kid who will get bullied, guess what, they’re going to get bullied. On the other hand, if your child radiates self-confidence they are less likely to be a victim, it’s almost that simple! Your child needs to walk with their head up; their shoulders square, and make eye contact with people. Just doing so, even if your child needs work on their self-esteem, will keep bullies away from them. This is easier said than done, but it can be learned. So having them change their body language (what they are saying non-verbally) will have a huge impact.

Teaching this can serve as a quick fix, however, going to work on their self-confidence will have a greater long-term affect on keeping bullies away. Children get their first layer of self-confidence from parents. The love you show your child and the time you spend with them gives them their feelings of self-worth. In fact, it has been said that the number one role of parenting is develop a self-confident individual. Teach them how to speak up clearly when they first meet someone. Teach them the importance of making eye-contact when they talk to you. Get them out of their comfort zone and have them explore new things. The more you have them confront fear and discomfort, the more confident they will become.

I get feed back from parents all the time about how great our martial-arts program is for developing self-confidence. Many parents tell me how we reinforce many of the values they are teaching at home. What we’re teaching has more of an impact because it’s coming from another source. Many parents also compliment our martial-arts program for teaching their kids about other values that add to their self-confidence. I guess kids learn by doing, and when they begin to accomplish goals that they didn’t believe they could, their self-confidence gets a boost, which then affects every area of life making them less of a target for bullies.

The next layer of defense is to create a boundary. I teach children how to protect their space with an assertive body posture. Feet apart a little, toes on a line, shoulders square, chin up, eye contact, and most importantly, hands up as if making a "Stop Gesture"! We call this our guard stance. Its purpose; to communicate neutrality, awareness and, assertiveness. This stance is designed to get them out of trouble.

Finally, your child will have to use their words. Simple phrases and commands said in an assertive voice will tell the bully that they will not be a victim. Simple commands like; "Stop", "Back Off", "Back Away"; said in the right tone, will stop the bully in his tracks! This is useful because the days of school yard fighting are over. It is valuable for your child to know how to defend themselves if the situation arises, but just the feeling of being competent in self-defense is an obstacle to a potential bully.

As you can see dealing with a bully has its challenges, there is no one way that works every time. However, when your child develops high levels of self-esteem, and self-confidence, a bully’s words or action will role off them like "water off a duck’s back".

I would love to help your child develop greater levels of self-confidence just like I’ve helped so many local kids in my school. Give me a call at 803-462-9425 and I’ll show in so many ways how martial-arts is the best program you can get your child involved in.

Sensei Feldt is the owner and chief instructor for Samurai Karate Studio. It is located on 2000 Clemson Road, Suite # 9, Columbia, SC 29229. If you would like additional information, you may visit our website at www.samuraikaratestudio.net.

Do you have what it takes to "live by the code"?

SKS White Belts

I know.....right now you are probably scratching your head, wondering what SKS White Belts have to do with Black Belt Concepts. Am I right?

Well, over the years, I have noted many similar character traits about my white belts, that no matter what your rank, you can take note of and learn from!

What is a white belt?

A white belt represents courage. How is that you say? Because a new student has to have the courage to make a long term committment, knowing that the road to black belt is 3-4 years and sometimes longer, depending on how often you come to class, how hard you train, how much you practice at home.

It is also at white belt, that a new student is most intimidated. Think of the first time you had to spar or the first time you were asked to come onto the dojo floor and perform your first karate form with all eyes watching you. I remember my first kata -- I was almost paralyzed with fear! Yet, somehow I gathered the courage to execute it; not well, but there was a certain satisfaction completing that task.

It is also very intimiating walking onto the Dojo floor and seeing your fellow karate students perform their warm ups like they were nothing, while you struggle with your first 10 laps or push ups. I remember my very first class with Master Earwood and wondered if I would be able to finish that first class, let alone think about ever achieving a black belt. That first warm up was tough, and it seemed like most of the students were having a fun time, while I was really working hard just to keep up!

A white belt represents humility. How is that you say? Because a new karate student has a wide open mind with no preconceived notions of how good they are or can be. Their first priority is to get through class, not worry about their next belt exam.

If you get a chance, watch the interaction between a white belt and a higher belt rank student that is assiting them in class. Their focus and intensity is great.....they act like they are being taught by one of the great masters of the art!

You never hear a white belt make a negative comment about another karate student. To them, everyone else appears perfect and they think they are the only one making mistakes on the dojo floor.

You will never hear a white belt complain about rank; or want to know why someone is testing, or gets to learn a new karate technique before them. The sole focus of a white belt is how to get better; almost oblivous of other students around them.

A white belt represents loyalty at a high level. How is that you say? It can't be, they have only been training a very short time. Often times it is the white belt that comes to karate class most frequently, attends the most seminars or workshops or volunteers to help the studio. They are so excited by what they are learning, that karate becomes a way of life for them and much of their time is devoted to learning their craft and helping the studio grow. Most referrals come from new students that are excited about their school and helping to see it grow.

As you begin to advance higher in rank, try to remember what it was like as a white belt, because a good black belt never forgets!

Samurai Karate Studio is located at 2000 Clemson Road, Suite # 9, Columbia, SC 29229. Even though he is considered a beginner in our karate studio, he already behaves and trains like a black belt! He is very intense, highly motivated, very focused, yet very humble and always willing to help a fellow student learn a new karate technique or warm up.

Of course, Brian has a great family that supports him. He has a wonderful wife and two beautiful daughters -- all of whom train at Samurai Karate Studio! Many restaurants serve very large portions and prepare foods with a lot of added fat. When you head out to eat, remember to choose your foods wisely. Ask questions about how foods are prepared to help you with your decision. Below are some quick tips that can assist you in making better choices:

1. Think small. NEVER super-size your food order.

2. Stay away from fried foods (fried chicken, fried fish, French fries, etc.). Choose grilled foods instead.

3. Steer clear of mayonnaise based salads like chicken salad, tuna salad, or egg salad. They may sound healthy but most are high in calories and fat.

4. When possible, select a green salad, vegetable, fruit, or baked potato (without butter and sour cream) instead of French fries or onion rings as your side item. If, on occasion, you would like French fries, order the small.

5. Choose low-fat, fat-free, or reduced-calorie dressings. Ask for them to be served on the side and limit portion sizes.

6. Leave off the mayonnaise, special creamy sauce, etc. Use mustard or ketchup instead.

7. Choose beverages wisely. Low fat milk, unsweetened tea, or water are better choices than sugary soft drinks or sweetened tea.

8. Choose thin crust, veggie pizza. Skip the breadsticks and instead, have a salad with low fat dressing as a side item.

9. Turkey, lean ham, or veggie subs without cheese or mayonnaise usually have less fat. Pile on the vegetables for more nutritional value.

10. Generally, restaurants serve large portions. Share a meal or take ½ home (ask for a “To Go” box when you place your order). This will save you from eating too many calories and feeling stuffed. You will also have leftovers for a later meal.

When eating out, plan ahead and be prepared to order healthier meal options most of the time. An occasional “not so healthy” meal choice can fit into a healthy nutrition plan as long as you jump back on track at your next meal.

Dining out often? Need more ideas? Congratulations, you have worked hard during our karate classes and you have reached the next level in your training.

While I expect all of my students to be prepared for class, occassionally, you will not be. What do I mean by this? Well, maybe you didn't get a good nights rest, maybe you didn't eat prior to coming to class, maybe you didn't take in enough fluids during the day. What ever the reason, please don't feel like you have to "tough" it out! While I expect your conditioning to gradually improve, I don't want you to complete a class if you become injured or feel faint.

Recently, I have had a few students probably push themselves a bit too hard, only to feel faint or overheated. While the martial arts' purist in me loves to see this kind of determination and intensity, I also don't want you to get hurt or pass out on me.

Make sure you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day, not just before or during karate class. Your body needs to be hydrated before you work out. This is particularly an issue with the children. After a few minutes of running, many of them are looking for water very quickly. If they were drinking enough water during the day, we would not have this rush on the water cooler.

Try to eat a snack or small meal a couple of hours before class. This way the food should be digested enough not to cause stomach issues and your body should be able to provide you with the energy you need to get you through your class.

Samurai Karate Studio is located in Columbia, SC 29229. Outside the Martial Arts

Well, it looks like the primaries are over and we finally have our major candidates determined for the general election. While I normally do not talk politics, I wanted to share my conversations with a group of kids from Weber Elementary School located in East Over.

I was fortunate to have been invited to teach the kids karate during one of their summer camps. The kids were primarily 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. While I wanted to teach them some techniques that might help them deal with bullies or strangers, a big part of my message was telling them about how important good character is and how it can impact them in such a positive way growing up.

Then I asked them if they knew what was important about our current political race for President. Not surprisingly, most didn't have an answer to this question, but a few of the kids did.

This is the first time in our history that we have an African American running for President. This was the first time in our history that we had a female running for President! How exciting!

Now, before everyone gets nervous thinking I am a Democrat, I have been an independent all of my voting life and I always vote for who I believe is the best person to lead our country. I have never voted just because of party affiliation. Quite frankly, I am not too excited with either party right now.

But, you have to admit, it's pretty cool to see a female and an African American going for the highest office in the land. 50 years ago, 25 years ago, maybe as little as 10 years ago; none of us thought this was even possible.

I told the children that they have the potential to be anything they want to be if they work hard, get good grades and have great character! These are some of the principles behind achieving your black belt in karate.

Who knows, maybe one of these children from Weber Elementary School might end up being President one day!

Samurai Karate Studio is located in Columbia, SC 29229. Please take the time to discuss this with your young teen at home.

As martial art's instructors, one of our primary goals is to create kids that are confident! A confident child walks more erect and generally is much more alert to danger. But the internet is different. To the average person it seems harmless, but as the story below shows, it can be quite dangerous.

After tossing her books on the sofa, she decided to grab a snack and get on-line. She logged on under her screen name ByAngel213 She checked her Buddy List and saw GoTo123 was on. She sent him an instant message:

ByAngel213: Hi. I'm glad you are on! I thought someone was following me home today. It WAS really weird!

GoTo123: LOL You watch too much TV. Why would someone be following you? Don't you live in a safe neighborhood?

ByAngel213: Of course I do. LOL I guess it was my imagination cuz' I didn't see anybody when I looked out. Go To123: Unless you gave your name out on-line. You haven't done that have you ?

ByAngel213: Of course not. I'm not stupi d you know.

GoTo123: Did you have a softball game after school today?

ByAngel213: Yes and we won!!

GoTo123: That's great! Who did you play?

ByAngel213: We played the Hornets. LOL. Their uniforms are so gross! They look like bees. LOL

GoTo123: What is your team called?

ByAngel213: We are the Canton Cats. We have tiger paws on our uniforms. They are really cool.

GoTo123: Did you pitch?

ByAngel213: No I play second base. I got to go. My homework has to be done before my parents get home. I don't want them mad at me. Bye!

GoTo123: Catch you later. Bye

Meanwhile......GoTo123 went to the member menu and began to search for her profile. When it came up, he highlighted it and printed it out. He took out a pen and began to write down what he knew about Angel so far. Her name: Shannon Birthday: Jan. 3, 1985 Age: 13 State where she lived: North Carolina Hobbies: softball, chorus, skating and going to the mall. Besides this information, he knew she lived in Canton because she had just told him. He knew she stayed by herself until 6:30 p.m. Every afternoon until her parents came home from work. He knew she played softball on Thursday afternoons on the school team, and the team was named the Canton Cats. Her favorite number 7 was printed on her jersey. He knew she was in the eighth grade at the Canton Junior High School . She had told him all this in the conversations they had on-line. He had enough information to find her now.

Shannon didn't tell her parents about the incident on the way home from the ballpark that day. She didn't want them to make a scene and stop her from walking home from the softball games. Parents were always overreacting and hers were the worst. It made her wish she was not an only child. Maybe if she had brothers and sisters, her parents wouldn't be so overprotective.

By Thursday, Shannon had forgotten about the footsteps following her. Her game was in full swing when suddenly she felt someone staring at her. It was then that the memory came back. She glanced up from her second base position to see a man watching her closely. He was leaning against the fence behind first base and he smiled when she looked at him. He didn't look scary and she quickly dismissed the sudden fear she had felt.

After the game, he sat on a bleacher while she talked to the coach. She noticed his smile once again as she walked past him. He nodded and she smiled back. He noticed her name on the back of her shirt. He knew he had found her.

Quietly, he walked a safe distance behind her. It was only a few blocks to Shannon's home and once he saw where she lived, he quickly returned to the park to get his car.

Now he had to wait. He decided to get a bite to eat until the time came to go to Shannon's house. He drove to a fast food restaurant and sat there until time to make his move.

Shannon was in her room later that evening when she heard voices in the living room. 'Shannon, come here', her father called. He sounded upset and she couldn't imagine why. She went into the room to see the man from the ballpark sitting on the sofa. 'Sit down', her father began, 'this man has just told us a most interesting story about you.' Shannon sat back. How could he tell her parents anything? She had never seen him before today!

'Do you know who I am, Shannon?' the man asked. 'No,' Shannon answered. 'I am a police officer and your online friend, GoTo123.' Shannon was stunned. 'That's impossible! GoTo is a kid my age! He's 14 and he lives in Michigan!'

The man smiled. 'I know I told you all that but it wasn't true. You see, Shannon, there are people on line who pretend to be kids and I was one of them. While others do it to injure kids and hurt them, I belong to a group of parents who do it to protect kids from predators. I came here to find you to teach you how dangerous it is to talk to people on line. You told me enough about yourself to make it easy for me to find you. You named the school you went to, the name of your ball team, the position you played and the number and name on your jersey. It just made finding you a breeze.' Shannon was stunned. 'You mean you don't live in Michigan?' He laughed. 'No, I live in Raleigh. It made you feel safe to think I was so far away, didn't it?' She nodded.

'I had a friend whose daughter was like you, only she wasn't as lucky. The guy found her and murdered her while she was home alone. Kids are taught not to tell anyone when they are alone, yet they do it all the time on line. The wrong people trick you into giving out information a little here and there on line. Before you know it, you have told them enough for them to find you without even realizing you have done it. I hope you've learned a lesson from this and won't do it again. Tell others about this so they will be safe too.' 'It's a promise!'

That night Shannon and her Mom and Dad all knelt down together and thanked God for protecting Shannon from what could have been a tragic situation.

Samurai Karate Studio is located in Columbia, SC 29229. classes and some of the teachers even participated. The custodial staff was great in making sure the gym had air conditioning as it was really hot outside.

Overall, this was a great group of kids, primarily 3rd through 5th graders. They were very energetic, enthusiastic and fairly well mannered. Occassionally some of the kids would be wild, but a few laps or push ups got their attention. Yes, I treated these kids just like I would if they were attending class in my karate studio.

My main focus was to give the kids some general karate techniques that might help them on the street. However, my primary focus was about discipline, being the best you can be and treating your fellow student with respect and kindness.

On day one, we talked about the two main rules we follow at Samurai Karate Studio:

1. Avoid conflict at all costs and,
2. Never use your martial arts outside of the studio unless you are in danger and need to protect yourself.

We also talked about the importance of good body language......being confident when we walk and keeping our heads up so that we can be aware of what's happening around us.

The rest of the class consisted of learning how to form a fist and punching correctly.

On day two, I talked about Black Belt concepts and what it means to train in the martial arts. Black belts have great focus and discipline, but also show great honor, integrity and respect. I reminded them of the importance of having good character and always saying yes sir, no sir, please, thank you, etc.

We finished day two learning backfists and standing in the guard position.

On day three, we talked about the Samurai. Even though they were fierce warriors and highly skilled in combat, they were also known for being well educated and having great character. Throughout this class, I would ask a student that was misbehaving, if they were living by the code of the Samurai.

We finished this class with learning how to front kick and side kick. We also had a great time trying to hit the focus pad correctly by every student in the class.

On day four, I talked about character and how important it was for these kids growing up, to have great character. I told them they could be anything they wanted to be when they grew up, as long as they worked hard, got good grades and had great character. I reminded them that maybe one of them could be President of the United States one day!

The balance of class we worked on bully tactics as well as stranger danger!

I really enjoyed this group of kids and hoped they were able to learn as much from me as I was able to learn from them.

I wish all the children attending Weber Elementary School's summer camp all the best and have a great and safe summer!

Samurai Karate Studio is located in Columbia, SC 29229. class for our students and their fathers on Saturday, June 14th. We had a great time!

During the Little Samurai class, which is for boys and girls ages 4-6, the Dad's participated in our dodgeball warm up, with the father's winning one game and the kids the other. After warm ups, each child showed their father how they train in the martial arts. I saw flag sparring, push ups, stretching, lots of kicks and punches. After class we took a group picture and then celebrated with a cake that was delicious.

Thanks to the fathers that participated in this special karate class.......your little ones had a great time!

During the children's class, which is for kids 7-12 years of age, the older kids teamed up against their fathers during warm ups with a spirited game of team dodge ball! The Dad's won most of the games......way to go Dad"s!

After warm ups, we participated in sword sparring and had a great time. Once again the Dad's did very well winning 2 out of 3 tournaments. Thanks to all the kids and fathers that participated! After class, we finished up the yummy cake.

At Samurai Karate Studio, one of our goals is to help children and adults feel more confident about themselves by teaching them self defense techniques that could be used on the street if necessary. More importantly, our studio is about family and family values such as honor, respect, integrity, discipline and yes, love.

My father made many sacrifices for me while growing up so that I could take advantage of any opportunity that came my way. I am blessed that he is still alive and I consider myself to be very lucky to have one of the great Dad's of the greatest generation ever!

I love you Dad! Happy Father's Day!

Samurai Karate Studio is located in Columbia, SC 29229. Here's why — and how — to include stretching in your fitness routine. You pound out three miles on the treadmill. You work your way through a series of weightlifting exercises. You even add some time on the stationary bike for good measure — and you smile with satisfaction that you made it through your workout. Nothing to do now but hit the shower. Not so fast. Did you consider stretching those muscles that pulled you through your invigorating workout? Most aerobic and strength training programs inherently cause your muscles to contract and flex. For equal balance, pay attention to stretching those muscles after your workout.

Benefits of stretching Regular stretching is a powerful part of any exercise program.

1. Stretching increases flexibility. Flexible muscles can improve your daily performance. Tasks such as lifting packages, bending to tie your shoes or hurrying to catch a bus become easier and less tiring.

2. Stretching improves range of motion of your joints. Good range of motion keeps you in better balance, which will help keep you mobile and less prone to injury from falls — especially as you age.

3. Stretching improves circulation. Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles. Improved circulation can speed recovery after muscle injuries.

4. Stretching promotes better posture. Frequent stretching keeps your muscles from getting tight, allowing you to maintain proper posture and minimize aches and pains.

5. Stretching can relieve stress. Stretching relaxes the tense muscles that often accompany stress.

6. Stretching may help prevent injury. Preparing your muscles and joints for activity can protect you from injury, especially if your muscles or joints are tight. Stretching essentials Ready, set, stretch!

7. Target major muscle groups. When you're stretching, focus on your calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck and shoulders. Also stretch muscles and joints that you routinely use at work or play.

8. Warm up first. Stretching muscles when they're cold increases your risk of injury, including pulled muscles. Warm up by walking while gently pumping your arms, or do a favorite exercise at low intensity for five minutes. Better yet, stretch after you exercise — when your muscles are warm and more receptive to stretching. One caveat: If you plan to stretch only after your workout, increase the intensity of the activity more slowly than you would if you had stretched your muscles before exercising.

9. Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds. It takes time to lengthen tissues safely. Hold your stretches for at least 30 seconds — and up to 60 seconds for a really tight muscle or problem area. That can seem like a long time, so keep an eye on the clock or your watch. Then repeat the stretch on the other side. For most muscle groups, a single stretch is often enough if you hold it long enough.

10. Don't bounce. Bouncing as you stretch can cause small tears in the muscle. These tears leave scar tissue as the muscle heals, which tightens the muscle even further — making you less flexible and more prone to pain.

11. Focus on a pain-free stretch. Expect to feel tension while you're stretching. If it hurts, you've gone too far. Back off to the point where you don't feel any pain, then hold the stretch.

12. Relax and breathe freely. Don't hold your breath while you're stretching. How often to stretch is up to you. As a general rule, stretch whenever you exercise. If you don't exercise regularly, you might want to stretch at least three times a week to maintain flexibility. If you have a problem area, such as tightness in the back of your leg, you might want to stretch every day or even twice a day.

Know when to exercise caution

You can stretch anytime, anywhere — in your home, at work or when you're traveling. If you have a chronic condition or an injury, however, you may need to alter your approach to stretching. For example, if you have a strained muscle, stretching it like usual may cause further harm. Discuss with your doctor or a physical therapist the best way to stretch.

Samurai Karate Studio teaches a traditional style of karate to children and adults starting at 4 years of age. Old!

There has been a lot of hype centered around the new movie by Dreamworks called "Kung Fu Panda", so I decided I would see what it was all about.

The story is centered around a giant Panda, whose name is Po, who is fat and lazy and helps sell noodle soup for his father, who is a duck. Despite being everything to the contrary, Po's dream is to one day become a great Kung Fu Master! He constantly dreams of being a great martial artist!

By sheer luck, Po happens to be in the right place at the wrong time, and is chosen to be the great "Dragon Warrior" whose mission is to protect the valley and all it's people. It is implied that the "Dragon Warrior" has almost mystical Kung Fu powers, yet no one, including Po, really believes he is capable of defending the valley from a significant threat, in the form of Tai Lung, a magnificent Snow Leopard that is the ultimate Kung Fu warrior.

Without giving the story away, this movie is a lot about good vs. evil and reaching within one's self and finding the inner strength we all have to do the impossible. If we believe in ourselves, we can do anything! It is also about having faith in others. These are many of the themes we teach our students during karate class. We have the potential to be great, we just have to develop the confidence and discipline to work hard and reach our dreams.

The movie was very good, but I think it was a little over hyped. The special effects are brilliant! The animated characters appear so alive as to seem human. Of course there was some well placed humor, which Dreamworks has a great reputation for.

I thought there could have been a little more substance to the story, but overall, it was enjoyable and presented a refreshing positive message, which is really missing in many of the movies today, let alone a martial arts movie!

If you watch the characters very closely, you will see many traditional Kung Fu techniques including palm heel strikes, side kicks, spinning hook kicks, front kicks, punches, etc. I expect many children will see this movie and practice Kung Fu the moment they get home!

I give this movie a "thumbs up"!

Sensei Feldt

Samurai Karate Studio offers a traditional style of karate for children and adults, starting at age 4 and up.

There are certain character traits shared by black belts such as discipline, integrity, focus, perserverance and a "never give up" kind of attitutde. Over the years, I have seen some very successful blackbelts who all seemed to have certain habits that were common to them. Outlined below are the 7 habits of highly successful martial artists.

Habit One - Be There

Getting to karate class is important not only to continue your learning
but also to provide your body with the routine of physically and
mentally utilizing your knowledge. Experts have determined that two
classes per week is optimal for beginners and lower intermediate
students, while higher intermediate and advanced students may
benefit from three or more classes.

Habit Two - Practice

Reviewing at home what you learn in class is critical to enabling
you to master your skills. Home practice makes your class
experience much more beneficial and comfortable. Practice anything
new you learn in class for five to ten minutes as soon as you get
home that day. This ensures that you practice your new material
properly while it is still fresh in your mind.

Habit Three - Eat Right

You are what you eat. Eat healthfully and your body will pay
dividends when you challenge yourself mentally as well as
physically.

Good nutrition is recognized as a necessity for peak performance.
And it's never too late to make nutrition a priority, so forget
what may have happened over the holidays!

Habit Four- Stretch Daily

Muscles that are stretched routinely become more flexible.
Flexible muscles respond stronger and faster which allows your body
to perform your martial arts techniques with a "superman" quality.

An added benefit is an increased metabolism......and we can all use
that, right?

(Note: remember to always warm up your muscles before stretching.)

Habit Five - Meditation

Yes, meditate. Now you don't have to lull yourself into a trance.
Just take five to ten minutes a day by yourself; close your eyes, breathe and relax.

Those precious few minutes right before you pass out in bed each
night don't count. Challenge yourself to budget additional time
each day.

Habit Six - Teaching

Help out a fellow karate student or teach yourself. The teaching process
actually "hard codes" information into your brain and helps you
learn better. In fact, this is a great practicing strategy.

Stand in front of a mirror and verbally teach yourself how to
perform a technique. While speaking out loud, make necessary
corrections and positively reinforce yourself.

It may sound silly, but it works!

Habit Seven - Set Goals

Have you offi cially set Black Belt as your goal yet? Have you set
a specific time-line to achieve that goal? Have you set a goal for
your next rank?

Would you like to teach some day or have your own school? What are
your goals?

A goal set is a goal already half completed.

Ask yourself if you have these kinds of habits? If you do, than you are sure to be successful!

Samurai Karate Studio teaches a traditional style of karate for children and adults, beginning with children 4 years and older. If you would like additional information about our studio, please call 803-462-9425 or visit our website at www.samuraikaratestudio.net.

Do you have what it takes to "live by the code"?

Martial Artists Celebrate Memorial Day 2008

The History

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war).

It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

(History provided by usmemorialday.org)

Samurai Karate Studio

Many of the families that are students of our studio, are currently members of the military! I have come to know many of these children and parents and I have to say they are by far the most disciplined, patriotic, enthusiastic and loyal students I have ever known!

I am talking about fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and grandparents! I see how hard many of them work and how committed they are to protecting our freedom; even at the expense of being away from their family's.

We have had two members of our studio stationed in Iraq. One just came home a couple of months ago. Another is due home in a week. Please say a prayer for Mr. Goad and bring him home safely as he is so close to being reunited with his family.

My father was only 17 when he enlisted in the Navy during WWII. Fortunately for me, despite serving in the Philippines, he returned safely and went on to raise a family of 4 children with my mom. When asked about joining he said he never gave much thought about his own personal safety; just the thought of serving his country is what made him sign up.

I see that same sense of commitment and honor with my military families. No matter what the circumstances, they are prepared to defend our great country no matter what the cost! How can you not admire someone like that?

So this Memorial Day, please take a moment to reflect on our great country and say a prayer for those who have fallen to defend it. But also say a prayer for those that currently serve and keep them safe in their journeys.

Next time you see a solider in uniform, remember to thank them for their courage, their sacrifice and their patriotism! I guarantee you will get a smile back!

I would like to end with a poem that is a tribute to the American soldier:

The American Hero
by Roger Robicheau

The American Hero always comes through
To capture our hearts with a spirit so true

Some proudly are soldiers who march in harm’s way
Insuring our freedom, courageous they stay

While others come forth as civilians so brave
Determined in purpose, so steadfast to save

We should always keep clear a place in our heart
For each has a value beyond precious art

Their duty to country will not be surpassed
Please honor their courage, for some it’s their last

We live in a world which can be hard to bear
Thank God for these people, how greatly they care

Do ponder new heroes and what they will face
And pray for their safety no matter their place

Our heritage brings out the best, we all know
Our great book of heroes is destined to grow

Samurai Karate Studio is teaches a traditional style of karate, serving children and adults starting at age 4 years and is located at 2000 Clemson Road, Suite # 9, Columbia, SC 29229. You may learn more about our studio by calling us at 803-462-9425 or visiting our website at www.samuraikaratestudio.net.

God Bless!

Do you have what it takes to "live by the code"?
